Healthcare Value-Based Purchasing (VBP)

Value-Based Purchasing is the linking of health provider payment to improved performance by health care providers. This type of payment systems account for healthcare provider both for the costs and quality of care they provider. For example, the provision of patient-centered care by safety-net hospitals (SNHs) has important implications both for patient outcomes and how these hospitals charge the value-based purchasing (VBP). Determine performance and improvement on measures of patient-reported hospital experience among SNHs compared with non-SNHs. National data on patient experience from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey in 2007 and 2010 were used to examine overall hospital performance and improvement over time.  Safety-net hospitals had lower performance than non-SNHs on nearly all measures of patient experience.
